There are many ways to measure the changes in healthcare over the last 20 years — the dominance of EHRs, new technologies, and empowered patients. And many were on display during Friday morning’s Keynote Address at the 2019 eClinicalWorks and healow National Conference.

Consider: HL7’s Da Vinci Project. FHIR-based data exchange. Carequality and CommonWell. Rising Risk and Disease Explorer. Pharmacy transparency. Telemedicine in which providers are the ones at home.

An audience from five years ago would have been bewildered. But eClinicalWorks CEO Girish Navani put it all in perspective: “eClinicalWorks is your creation. For that, I can simply say thank you.”

Sure, eClinicalWorks was born in a garage in 1999 and has grown to more than 5,000 employees. Yes, we serve 800,000 healthcare professionals. And, at 20 years old, the company has already exceeded the 15-year lifespan of the average tech company.

The reasons for that success include eClinicalWorks’ dedication to a customer-centric and team-based business model that delivers value.

But the most important factor has been adaptability at the intersection of technology and business.

Companies that fail to adapt — like BlackBerry, Polaroid, and Blockbuster — lose market share or disappear. At eClinicalWorks, as Girish said, “Today and tomorrow, we will reinvent ourselves.” Crucially, we do so together with our customers.

For example, it was NYC’s Urban Health Center that, more than a decade ago, taught us about health centers, UDS, and sliding-fee scales. Today, we serve more than 850 health centers nationwide, and health centers enjoy a prominent role at #eCWNC19.

Interoperability has grown from infancy to industry-wide adoption in a few years, and eClinicalWorks continues to pioneer new methods of data exchange, working with CMS and the nationwide CommonWell and Carequality networks.

The list of initiatives, ideas, and innovations is long, and each has a place at the National Conference.

As Saturday dawns, we encourage attendees to keep learning, talking, and moving. Check out eCW University. Get the training you need, whether in free 20-minute sessions or paid Hands-On Training. Learn about data security, price transparency, and the latest enhancements to the usability of our EHR.

But wherever you go and whatever you learn, remember that eClinicalWorks truly is your creation. Our success is your success. Let’s continue to show one another a better way to the future of healthcare!
